Exploring Rules

I have signed up for the 2nd part of Kat's Find Your Eye Journey of Recognition.  And the next lesson is
 Exploring Rules and breaking them.

I have to say though that I don't really follow rules as such. I go out with my camera and if I like something I take a picture. But looking at it logically I must follow rules in my head without thinking about it (I hope you know what I mean).

I was out on a walk the other day and it was a bright sunny day - for a change lol. I loved the way the sun was shining - but I know that you shouldn't really shoot into the sun but the picture below I really like and the main reason I like it is because of the direct sunlight.

Anyway do they not say that rules are made to be broken - or am I just a photographic rebel lol.

  1. Hi Ellie, I know what you mean about the rules - I still to have discover them, but have already learnt a couple since the beginning of the course!

I absoluteley love snowdrops and the way I can see the details of the ones in the foreground when I enlarge the picture. I like the fact that two or three of the autumn leaves are shining brightly with the light streaming behind them.

The sunrays make you feel happy to be alive and give a lovely atmosphere!

  2. Hi Ellie,
When I'm at work I follow rules, but in photography, I'm finding that doing what looks right and feels right, even if it "breaks the rules", many times renders very pleasant surprises on the image. Although the light in the background is bright, there is a natural feel to the photo as well as relaxing. The transluscence of the little flowers brought out by the light is lovely.

  3. What an interesting place. I am always breaking the rules- or forgetting them altogether.

  4. Hi Ellie,
I agree, once we are aware of the "rules" then we can go out and break them to capture our vision for the piece. I do love the fairy-like, magical light that you've captured by shooting into the light. This light really suits the scene!

  5. I love your rebellious streak Ellie! The light is beautiful here. The "rules" are often created to help people learn the basics of any art. In photography, learning to work with the light is what you are after, and sometimes that means shooting into the light. You did a great job!

  6. Yeah go for it girl - break those rules and let your creativity ooze through the images. You sure captured some great light with this - I love shooting into the light and sometimes I see other people walking past me horrified at me pointing into the light.

  9. Now how would we ever break new ground if we never broke any rules? Good job on following your heart, I agree the sun rays are lovely and this photo makes me happy (and anxious for spring!)

  21. ALWAYS aim for the sun. : ) How much life would be lost in that scene if you shot it with the sun at your back! ; ) xo
